“$150 for a palm-sized box that was unusable. Then ghosted.”
During a technical competition, my friends and I needed parts urgently. We turned to Carousell, hoping for a quick solution. What we got was a quote of $150 for a small, palm-sized box.
Desperate and out of options, we paid it. When the part arrived, it was completely unusable. Wrong dimensions, poor quality, not even close to what we needed. We reached out to the seller for help or a refund. Crickets. Ghosted.
That experience left a mark. Not just because we lost money and time, but because it exposed how broken the system was. No transparency in pricing. No accountability for quality. No communication when things went wrong.
I decided right then: I would build the service I wished existed.
ORB. is built on three principles learned from that experience:

I'm not going to pretend to be something I'm not. ORB. is in its early stages. I don't have a massive workshop, a large team, or thousands of completed projects yet.
What I do have:
- Professional-grade FDM 3D printers capable of high-quality parts
- A fully transparent pricing system that gives you instant quotes
- Personal commitment to quality - I check every print myself
- Direct communication - you talk to me, not a support team
- Experience being on the receiving end of bad service - I know what NOT to do
Starting Small Is Intentional
I want to ensure every early customer gets excellent service. Building a reputation for quality and reliability takes time, and I'd rather start small and grow sustainably than promise what I can't deliver.

Meet the founder
Kim-Yang Ng
Founder, ORB.
Background

Meet our founder, Kim-Yang Ng. His background spans mechatronics, robotics, and autonomous systems. He took part in SGInnovate's Summation Programme and is currently studying at the Singapore Institute of Technology. Before ORB., he worked as a mechanical design engineer in the robotics industry, where he regularly had parts fabricated across 3D printing, CNC, and sheet metal. He knows what it takes to get something made right.
ORB. came out of a real experience: paying $150 on Carousell for a palm-sized box that arrived unusable, then getting ghosted. That was both sides of the marketplace broken at once: no transparency, no accountability, no quality control. So he built what he wished had existed.
He built the platform frontend to backend: the slicer pipeline, automated job routing, payment integration, load balancing, the whole stack. Nothing in production is a black box to him. That was a deliberate choice: he wanted to own every layer of the system he's standing behind. No funding, no compromise. Built entirely from the ground up, driven by the belief that serious manufacturing should be accessible to everyone.
